Habits
According to Websters Dictionary a habit is “a usual way of behaving: something that a person does often in a regular and repeated way”, it is what we do in an automatic mode, brushing our teeth, getting dress in a specific order, getting a cup of coffee when we get to the office., etc.. A habit can be categorized in three basic broad categories, positive, neutral or negative; positive habits enhance and add value to our life and/or the lives of those around us, on the other hand negative ones are a detriment that can do significant damage to our life and others. Neutral habits are those that do not add or subtract to our lives but are only routine actions that we are accustomed to and do not require any effort.
In business, the habits of successful individuals are analyzed, categorized, written about and imitated constantly. In his book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, Stephen Covey defines habits as “the intersection of knowledge, skill and desire”. Once we know what are the habits that successful people have in common, we then can acquire the skills to imitate them in hopes of obtaining the same results, however, only a real internal desire will bring about change.
In order to develop habits that will produce positive results and help you obtain the success that you are looking for, you must first clearly define your definition of success and the priorities in your life. Do you define success on a personal or professional level? What about family, friends, recognition, respect, spiritual fulfillment? Who will be with you when and if you reach your goals?
We are not one dimensional objects, we are humans beings with lots of needs, desires and wants and we must set priorities an goals that include every aspect of our lives in order to obtain the success we dream of as a whole person and not in pieces. Success, in most cases, is not an overnight event; it is an accumulation of consistent actions in the desire direction. It takes planning, commitment and focus.
Know who you are, where you want to go and with whom and then set your priorities in the right order. Develop good habits; they will lead you to a life of fulfillment.
